You don’t need to be a top scorer.
You don’t need a mega-station.
You just need to be willing to say:

“I can help.”

Welcome to Elmering — DZC Style

If you’re new here, take a moment and really look at the image to the left.
Not a quick glance — actually look

Good operators notice details, and great Elmers notice people.

Around here, Elmering isn’t about showing how much you know; it’s about paying attention, lending a hand (sometimes more than one 😉), and helping another amateur get on the air, get comfortable, and get better. This page exists to celebrate those moments — where someone took the time to help, explain, encourage, or inspire you, — and we challenge you to do the same.

Welcome to the DZC Elmer Challenge

Someone helped you once. Now it’s your turn.

Contesting can look intimidating from the outside.
Downright scary to those that have never done it.
Fast exchanges, Busy crowded bands, People saying things really fast at you that make no sense.
And yet… every one of us remembers the moment it clicked — often because someone helped us.

That’s what the DZC Elmer Challenge is all about.

This challenge is an invitation — and a friendly nudge — to step up as an Elmer:

  • Help another operator improve their contesting skills,

  • Encourage a hesitant ham to try their very first contest,

  • Answer questions, calm nerves, share experience,

  • And remind someone that contesting is supposed to be fun!

 What Counts as Elmering?

Elmering comes in many forms, including:

Helping someone set up logging software

 Explaining contest rules or exchanges

Coaching during (or before) a contest

 Encouraging a first CQ

Being the calm voice when things go sideways

Turning “I’m not sure I belong here” into “That was fun — when’s the next one?”

If your help made contesting less scary and more enjoyable, it counts.

 Why This Page Exists

This page exists to recognize and inspire.

Here, we will highlight real DZC members who:

Took the time to help others

 Helped create new contesters

 Strengthened our community through Elmering

Their stories will be shared here, not to brag, but to remind us that the strongest clubs grow by lifting others up.

You might inspire someone else to become an Elmer… Or help a newcomer realize they’re welcome.

 The Challenge

Throughout the year, DZC members are encouraged to:

 Elmer someone

 Share that experience

And help grow contesting participation within our group

At the end of the year, special recognition will be given to members whose Elmering made a real impact.

But the real reward?  Seeing someone else get hooked on contesting — because of you!

 Ready to Get Started?

 Look around this page.
 Read the stories.
Then ask yourself one simple question:

    Who could I help?

Because somewhere out there is a future contester just waiting for one friendly voice to say:

“Jump in — we’ve got you.”
